HD Hyundai will work with Naver Cloud to build an artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem for the shipbuilding industry.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding institutional sector, said on the 20th that it recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Naver Cloud to innovate the shipbuilding business based on physical AI.
Under the agreement, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Naver Cloud plan to cooperate in areas including: ▲ building AI and cloud infrastructure tailored to shipbuilding ▲ establishing data centers and integrated power infrastructure ▲ collaboration on Software-Defined Vessel (SDV) and shipbuilding AX technologies ▲ utilizing physical AI and robotics technologies ▲ and digital education.
The two companies also plan to promote digital transformation across the entire shipbuilding business—from ship design to production and research and development—by building customized cloud and AI factories for shipbuilding. They will jointly form specialized teams to carry out personnel exchanges, including discovering AI use models, conducting technology validation, and training professionals.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Naver Cloud plan to cooperate in the power infrastructure needed for data centers as well. The focus is on building a power supply chain for data centers by leveraging HD Hyundai’s eco-friendly engine technologies and eco-friendly energy solutions such as energy storage systems (ESS) and hydrogen fuel cells.
They will also push to realize a smart shipyard based on physical AI technology.
The two companies agreed to jointly develop and demonstrate AI models that combine a ship data platform with AI software and robotics technologies. They also plan to cooperate in the SDV field, which enables controlling and operating ships based on software even after construction.
Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, said, “By adding Naver’s AI technology to HD Hyundai’s more than 200 million shipbuilding and offshore databases, we will build an AI ecosystem specialized for the shipbuilding industry,” and added, “We will successfully complete the establishment of an AI-based intelligent smart shipyard and lead the future ship market.”
