Dec 16 (Reuters) – Chip giant NVIDIA announced the completion of its acquisition of SchedMD, an AI software company, on December 16. The deal underscores NVIDIA’s ongoing push into open-source technology and its strategy to refine its AI ecosystem and enhance industry competitiveness. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 2010 in Livermore, California, by Slurm software developers Morris “Mo” Jette and Danny Auble, SchedMD employs approximately 40 people. Its core technology is Slurm, an open-source software that efficiently schedules large-scale computing tasks—critical for data center server management and widely used by foundation model developers and AI builders for model training and inference. Notably, Slurm has been adapted to support NVIDIA’s latest hardware, making it a key infrastructure for generative AI development. While Slurm is free for developers and enterprises, SchedMD generates revenue through professional engineering support and maintenance services, with clients including cloud infrastructure firm CoreWeave and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
NVIDIA confirmed that post-acquisition, it will continue distributing SchedMD’s software as open-source to ensure ecosystem continuity and openness.
